Spring Schedule (click on class title to read description) Introduction to Yoga Series Starts Thursday, 3/11. Port Orchard Schedule
Class Descriptions: (before beginning a class be sure to let your teacher know of any injuries or physical limitations such as pregnancy and/or high blood pressure.)
Therapeutic Yoga – This continuing class will focus on using yoga in a rehabilitory capacity. This class is intended for students who are recovering from an acute injury or are dealing with a chronic one. The class is also ideal for students who are limited in their flexibility and mobility due to chronic conditions and/or general fitness level. Chairs or bolsters will be provided for students who do not wish to practice sitting on the floor. Senior Yoga – The benefits of yoga for seniors are much the same as those for the general population: increased muscle tone, balance, strength, and flexibility. One of the great things about yoga is that it is so adaptable to different populations with diverse physical abilities and needs. Though the popular image of yoga is of a young person twisted up like a pretzel with apparent ease, those who are older and less flexible can enjoy a yoga practice just as much and potentially benefit from it even more. Yoga has been shown to help alleviate or reduce many of these health challenges, making it an increasingly popular exercise choice for older adult population. Gentle Yoga – This class includes static stretches combined with slow movements and breathing to create and enhance overall body awareness. Students will learn how to quiet the body and mind with guided relaxation. Caution: students may reach a heightened level of inner stillness. Introduction to Yoga – This 8-week series systematically and incrementally develops all the basic information that a person needs to practice competently and confidently in any of our other classes. New students should definitely take this class as their primer. Once graduating from this series, they can then choose another regular “drop-in” class to attend based upon their yoga needs, time constraints and general level of physical fitness. Current studio clients are also welcome and encouraged to take this introductory series if they need a “refresher course” of yoga basics. If you often feel like you are “behind” or “not doing it right” in your regular class, please consider the Intro Series. Next Series Starts the Week of March 8th, Cost is $72. Go to the Rates page to register online. Registration deadline March 5th. Beginning Yoga – Welcome to the practice! Whether this is your first class or you want to renew your experience with yoga, this class is appropriate. Class will include detailed explanations of (asanas) poses as well as their modifications and variations. Students will learn how to link postures together into smooth flows or "vinyasas." Intermediate I & II – 60 minute classes: These classes are well suited for students who either have some yoga knowledge under their belt or who have a stable foundation of physical fitness. Students will focus on building internal heat and moving deeper into postures. Some classes may include Sun Salutations. Pranayama/breathing exercises will also be examined. Vinyasa - In this class, we'll play with our yoga in a seamless flow of breath and movement. This is a great way to kick off your weekend with a super boost of energy! 90 minute classes: The
longer time frame of this class allows for a deeper experience and
analysis of the poses, more incorporation of breathing awareness and
techniques, guided meditation, and an extended Savasana session.
Each class will include breath awareness, asana (pose)
instruction, yogic philosophy, and a luxurious, meditative, conclusion
in the Savasana pose. Students are encouraged to enroll for an 8
week series but are welcome to drop in to the class as space permits.
Prenatal - In this class,
we will prepare our bodies as well as prepare our minds for this great event of giving birth; helping
the well being of the child as well as the mother. Yoga helps us decrease most of the symptoms of
pregnancy that cause discomfort, such as back pain, constipation and swelling of the ankles. It improves
circulation, helps digestion and strengthens the uterus and the pelvic muscles. Yoga also improves
flexibility and endurance which will be tapped deeply during the birthing process. Most importantly it
brings awareness to the power of the breath. The breath is the bridge to a fulfilling experience of birth
for the mother and child. It brings us into the present moment and helps us to deal with our natural fears
and pain of childbirth and lets us tap into that inner most essence of being a woman and mother. What to Bring
Key Benefits
Classes usually start and end by chanting "OM". This is not for
religious purposes. Chanting helps center the body and mind before class. It is also a breathing exercise that
helps create strong lungs. "OM" is the ultimate sound, all sounds are in OM and OM is in all sounds. Enjoy the
way OM feels when you chant it. If chanting is not your thing then by all means don't chant! This is your yoga! Send mail to cynthia@expansionsyoga.com with questions or comments
