Class Descriptions: (before beginning a class be sure to let your teacher know of any injuries or physical limitations such as pregnancy and/or high blood pressure.)

Therapeutic Yoga – This continuing class will focus on using yoga in a rehabilitory capacity. This class is intended for students who are recovering from an acute injury or are dealing with a chronic one. The class is also ideal for students who are limited in their flexibility and mobility due to chronic conditions and/or general fitness level. Chairs or bolsters will be provided for students who do not wish to practice sitting on the floor.

Yoga for 50+ Level I – Gentle stretching exercises for vitality, strength, balance and flexibility, this very popular class is ideally suited for the over 50 population wanting to start a yoga practice. Marylynn Kintner’s gentle and specific instruction will guide you toward a notable increase in well-being. Marylynn is certified with Yoga Fit and is in her 2nd year teaching seniors at Expansion Yoga. Her gentle and specific instruction will guide you toward a notable increase in well-being. She can be contacted at
mlkintner@wavecable.com.

Yoga for 50+ Level II – Encouraging a stronger practice, level II offers a class that helps you to build on the strength and flexibility with specific attention to alignment. Continue building your yoga practice with a bit more challenging class. Join Linda who will motivate you to keep your yoga practice moving to higher levels of fitness and deeper levels of strength and inner peace. Linda has practiced yoga for 37 years and is a Purna Yoga teacher at the 500-hour level. Phone 360.930.0065 or email linda@rigell.org

Gentle Yoga – This class includes static stretches combined with slow movements and breathing to create and enhance overall body awareness.  Students will learn how to quiet the body and mind with guided relaxation.  Caution: students may reach a heightened level of inner stillness.

Introduction to Yoga – This 8-week series systematically and incrementally develops all the basic information that a person needs to practice competently and confidently in any of our other classes. New students should definitely take this class as their primer. Once graduating from this series, they can then choose another regular “drop-in” class to attend based upon their yoga needs, time constraints and general level of physical fitness. Current studio clients are also welcome and encouraged to take this introductory series if they need a “refresher course” of yoga basics. If you often feel like you are “behind” or “not doing it right” in your regular class, please consider the Intro Series.

Next Series Starts the Week of March 5th, 2012. Cost is $72. Go to the Rates page to register online. These classes tend to fill so register by February 27th to secure your spot. A minimum of four students required to run the class.

Beginning Yoga – Welcome to the practice!  Whether this is your first class or you want to renew your experience with yoga, this class is appropriate.  Class will include detailed explanations of (asanas) poses as well as their modifications and variations.  Students will learn how to link postures together into smooth flows or "vinyasas."

Intermediate I & II – 60 minute classes: These classes are well suited for students who either have some yoga knowledge under their belt or who have a stable foundation of physical fitness.  Students will focus on building internal heat and moving deeper into postures.  Some classes may include Sun Salutations.  Pranayama/breathing exercises will also be examined.

Vinyasa - In this class, we'll play with our yoga in a seamless flow of breath and movement.  This is a great way to kick off your week with a super boost of energy! The Heated Vinyasa classes are done at 90 degrees to preheat the muscles and encourage release of toxins.

90 minute classes: The longer time frame of this class allows for a deeper experience and analysis of the poses, more incorporation of breathing awareness and techniques, guided meditation, and an extended Savasana session.  Each class will include breath awareness, asana (pose) instruction, yogic philosophy, and a luxurious, meditative, conclusion in the Savasana pose.  Students are encouraged to enroll for an 8 week series but are welcome to drop in to the class as space permits.

Pilates Pilates builds up the core and abdominal “powerhouse” by using resistance techniques and proper breathing methods. We will use the Pilates Magic Circle to sculpt hard to reach muscle groups, increase stamina, and achieve overall toning for the whole body. The magic circle is a powerful tool to make Pilates fun while obtaining optimal results. Done primarily on the mat with some standing and side work, the exercises performed have great postural benefits for better balance and grace. What to bring to Pilates classes: Pilates magic circle and pilates mat.Class starts February 7th. Sign up directly with Nanette by contacting her at: meponi@yahoo.com or 206.856.3384.

What to Bring

  • Yoga mat - in the Silverdale-area you can get them at: Fred Meyer, Target and occasionally TJ Maxx.   Online you can get mats and other yoga accessories at our boutique: The Expansions Yoga Boutique
  • An open mind - be ready to try things you didn't know you could do!
  • An empty stomach - do not eat at least two hours before class

Key Benefits

  • Increased breath awareness
  • Increased muscle strength & flexibility
  • Relaxation

Classes usually start and end by chanting "OM".  This is not for religious purposes. Chanting helps center the body and mind before class.  It is also a breathing exercise that helps create strong lungs. "OM" is the ultimate sound, all sounds are in OM and OM is in all sounds. Enjoy the way OM feels when you chant it.  If chanting is not your thing then by all means don't chant!  This is your yoga!

Classes will offer variations for all asanas (postures) for all levels of ability.  Remember - whenever we start yoga in our lives is perfect - no experience or flexibility is required!

All classes end with guided relaxation.
